The Wildland Urban Interface (WUI): Assessing wildfire related risks to people, property and infrastructure in California.Risk to people and property from wildfire is a long-standing and complex issue in California. The need to better understand and characterize WUI has been an ongoing problem for researchers, managers and policy makers, with significant ties to recent Federal (National Fire Plan, Healthy Forest Initiative, Healthy Forest Restoration Act), State (California Fire Plan, PRC Section 4123, recent reports on the October 2003 fires in Southern California) and Local (Oakland Wildfire Prevention Assessment District, AB 2993 "Vargas" Bill) policy efforts. This page assembles FRAP’s recent efforts to characterize and map WUI statewide. Products are listed from earliest to most recent, and include a link to geographic data describing our most recent and complete picture of WUI compiled for the Forest and Range 2003 Assessment.
